2009 ARRI Conference - DETAILS

"Forestry Reclamation Approach In Action"
August 4-6, 2009
Jenny Wiley State Resort Park

The event will include field tours visiting several different coal mining operations, a stream reconstruction and a reforestation project that is being undertaken by the University of Kentucky. During the conference portion of the event, speakers will highlight information on successful permitting and reclamation strategies for forested post mining land uses.

Panels of regulatory and industry personnel will discuss the challenges and successes of utilizing the Forestry Reclamation Approach [FRA]. Progress and results of reforestation research will be presented by the academic community.

Tuesday’s Field Trip Includes:
ICG Mine Site at Rowdy, KY - You will see an active demonstration of Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) grading. While on this site you will also view cutting edge bee research and how it partners with ARRI and the FRA.
Big Elk Mine "Starfire" Reforestation Research Plots - You will see the University of Kentucky’s (UK) reforestation research cells that support high value Appalachian hardwood species planted in 1996 & 1997 using three distinctive grading formats; traditional grading, FRA grading, and end dumping with no grading.
UK’s Guy Cove Headwater Stream Reconstruction Project on the "Pittston Mine" - You will view a hollow fill reconstruction project that incorporates "state of the art" stream reconstruction techniques, FRA grading and hardwood plantings to reestablish a headwater stream.

Thursday’s Field Trip Includes:
UK’s Reforestation Research Cells established on Appalachian Fuels, LLC’s Bent Mountain Mine in Pike County, KY - You will observe an experimental water chemistry collection point, one of the largest American chestnut plantings established on a mine site, reclaimed areas that have been ripped to alleviate compaction and FRA areas that have been end dumped and planted in trees.

LODGING - Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, located in the heart of the coal fields, nestled in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky on Dewey Lake near Prestonsburg, Kentucky. The park is operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Department of Parks. The Park is located off US 23 at KY 1428.

All 49 rooms and all of the one and two bedroom cottages have been set aside for attendees of the conference. Participants are responsible for making their own lodging reservation. Rooms and cottages will be held until July 3, 2009.

To reserve a room or cottage please call 1 800-325-0142 and request the lodge room rate of $59.95 or request a one bedroom cottage for $107.96 or a two bedroom cottage for $130.46 plus tax. A block of 75 rooms is available at the Heritage House (formerly Holiday Inn) in Prestonsburg. This block will be held until July 1, 2009 (606-886-0001).

Includes Tuesday and Thursday field trips, conference materials, transportation, breakfasts for all three days, lunch for Tuesday and Wednesday, refreshment breaks, and barbeque dinner on Tuesday

STUDENT REGISTRATION (DISCOUNTED PRICE) - $50.00

Cancellations must be received 7 days prior to conference in order to receive a refund.  Registered persons may be substituted for someone else.
