ARRI’s 3rd Annual
Conference & Field Tours, "Forestry Reclamation Approach in Action", will be held August 4
through 6, 2009 at the beautiful
Jenny Wiley
State Resort Park in Prestonsburg, Kentucky.
Panels of regulatory and industry personnel will discuss the challenges and successes of utilizing the Forestry Reclamation Approach [FRA]. Progress and results of reforestation research will be presented by the academic community.

Tuesday’s Field Trip Includes:
ICG Mine Site at Rowdy, KY - You will see an active demonstration of Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) grading. While on this site you will also view cutting edge bee research and how it partners with ARRI and the FRA.
Big Elk Mine "Starfire" Reforestation Research Plots
- You will see the University of Kentucky’s (UK) reforestation research cells that support high value Appalachian hardwood species planted in 1996 & 1997 using three distinctive grading formats; traditional grading, FRA grading, and end dumping with no grading.
UK’s Guy Cove Headwater Stream Reconstruction Project on
the "Pittston Mine" - You will view a hollow fill reconstruction project that incorporates "state of the art" stream reconstruction techniques, FRA grading and hardwood plantings to reestablish a headwater stream.

Thursday’s Field Trip Includes:
UK’s Reforestation Research Cells established on Appalachian Fuels, LLC’s Bent Mountain Mine in Pike County, KY
- You will observe an experimental water chemistry collection point, one of the largest American chestnut plantings established on a mine site, reclaimed areas that have been ripped to alleviate compaction and FRA areas that have been end dumped and planted in trees.
12:00 pm - FIELD TRIP CONCLUDES
All 49 rooms and all of the one and two bedroom cottages have been set aside for attendees of the conference. Participants are responsible for making their own lodging reservation. Rooms and cottages will be held until July 3, 2009.
