ICG LLC hosted the Arbor Day event. Thirty chestnuts will be planted by school children.
The planting will be held on a true FRA active permit. School children and watershed groups will be involved.
Ohio has partnered with OH University on a 35 acre Division of Wildlife property. On April 11 and 12 volunteers and students will plant a 20 acre site. They will also plant on a ripped site across the road. On April 19 BARK will help in planting 2,700 chestnuts and 10,000 hardwoods for a total of 23,000 hardwoods planted in OH for the events.
Jennings Environmental Center off of Route 8 near Slippery Rock. The Center and surrounding property is owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Economic Development (DCNR), and the facility administrator is excited about ARRI and is willing to devote a small portion of the property for educational and demonstration purposes. A small plot will be prepared using FRA and planted with American chestnut. The site would be on an interpretative trail, near a mine discharge that is being treated by a passive system.
National Coal Company- 2 acre short steep slope, loose graded and another lesser slope, loose graded, plant trees and chestnuts
The company decided to revise their 200 acre permit to include FRA because of this initiative. This year TN is only going to plant chestnuts with the one company for the Springboard.
Clint Gap, carbon sequestration, 80 acres
The Nature Conservancy is going to be involved this year. They have prepared two acres for the event. Previously the area was not FRA compliant. The operator ripped it in order to make it FRA compliant. They will have 33 tree planters on site, five area high schools will be represented with 25 students from each school.
They will plant a mixture of seedlings some being American chestnuts. They are getting 6 hybrid American chestnut seedlings from the American Chestnut Foundation to plant. The VA ARRI award will be given at this Arbor Day event. Secretary Kempthorn is scheduled to attend the event.
Elk Run Coal Company is going to host the Arbor Day event. A middle school will help. Details are still being worked out.
