For FY 2009, the objective of the NTTT Applied Science Program is to develop and demonstrate improved technologies to address environmental issues related to the mining of coal and reclamation of the land after mining. Applicants may request funding, not to exceed $200,000. The award will be by cooperative agreement (or as an Interagency Agreement if another Federal Agency is involved).
High priority topics for FY 2009 that will receive two additional points in the consensus scoring process include:
- Reforestation Issues: Develop innovative and improved methods for: (1) cost effectiveness; (2) forest productivity; and (3) erosion control; and
- Invasive Species: Develop innovative and improved methods for identifying, assessing, managing, and preventing invasive species (i.e. cheat grass, etc.) on reclaimed mine lands.

In 2008, seven of the eleven funded projects were ARRI-related with a total of $939,044 invested in the advancement of FRA technology. Now we have the chance to further enhance and refine our reforestation practices with 2009 proposals that target issues of importance and relevance to us all.
Maximum proposal amount is set at $200,000, the forms have been better aligned with the grants process, and the proposal review process has been improved. So getting relevant, worthy proposals is the first step to funding quality projects and ultimately improving reforestation reclamation.
Please refer any potential proposers that you feel meet the appropriate criteria.
