Summit Conference - April 14, 2009, Charleston, WV

Please consider participating in the upcoming meeting on the Coffee-Coal-Cerulean Warbler Connection at the Summit Conference Center to develop and discuss ideas for a new, innovative industry-conservation partnership between the coal mining and coffee industries in North and South America, and the Cerulean Warbler Technical Group (CWTG).

The CWTG is a broad-based group of stakeholders and technical experts focused on identifying meaningful conservation solutions for cerulean warblers through sound science, clear communication, and partner trust.  This new industry partnership, as currently envisioned, would work toward improving habitat conditions for cerulean warblers on both their breeding and wintering grounds, while also providing marketing and public relations opportunities for the industries and education opportunities for local communities.

ARRI has a strong interest in such a partnership, since the reforestation of mined lands is one of the key activities that could benefit cerulean warblers.  Government agency and conservation group interest and support is also strong for this partnership idea, including the U.S. Office of Surface Mining, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Forest Service, and the Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture (a regional bird conservation partnership).

Attending the meeting will be a broad group of industry representatives and representatives from the CWTG.

In the DOCUMENTS section below is a draft proposal containing some basic concepts that have been discussed for this partnership as well as a brief agenda for the April meeting.  The draft proposal provides initial suggestions on some of the concepts that could be part of such a partnership (e.g., collaboration opportunities, goals, strategies, outcomes), but these suggestions are intended simply as a starting point for discussion and need much greater industry review and input.  The meeting in April is intended to be such a forum, with opportunities for industry representatives to evaluate potential partnership benefits, suggest alternative ideas, and gauge the level of interest in participating in this kind of partnership.
